FACT CHECKING THE REPUBLICANS: HOW LONG IS PINOCCHIO’S NOSE?
Our opponents’ October 19, 2020 letter contains the same lies and distortions repeated by the current mayor. Here are some excerpts from their letter with facts that our opponents won’t tell you.
Republicans claim: “They eliminated waste in our municipal budget, including cutting the Administrator position…”
Fact: The Republicans did NOT in fact cut the Administrator position. The administrator resigned in March of 2017. A bi-partisan study concluded that the position could be eliminated due to previous staffing changes.
While staffing and services for residents have been cut under Republican leadership the past three years, the total budget has actually increased almost ten percent.
The Republicans brag about not taking salaries for their positions on the Township Committee. This practice was a Democratic leadership initiative proposed in 2015 to help keep the budget flat. The only person to object to not receiving his salary? Republican Committeeman Tim Mathews.
Republicans claim they are “… working on a multi-year program to fix our badly neglected roads.”
Fact: In 2017, current Republican Mayor Rick Wolfe ridiculed the issue of road safety and blamed farmers for destroying the roads! He then stated that spending on roads should be submitted to the voters. Republicans are using the tax increase they voted against to fix our STILL badly neglected roads.
Republicans claim they are “…working to revitalize Ringoes Village.”
Fact: In 2015- 2016, the Democratic led township committee studied ways to improve conditions in Ringoes Village Based on findings, an ordinance was passed that required remediation or demolition of any building deemed unsafe by the Construction Official. Under this ordinance, several unsightly dilapidated buildings were demolished and an open foundation was filled.
In addition, Democratic led Township Committees obtained State and County grant funding to enable the rehabilitation of the Clawson House, which is now a beautiful museum celebrating the history of East Amwell.
Republicans claim that “They brought back our library.”
Fact: The library was moved from Ringoes to West Amwell because the former owner of the building raised the rent and the Freeholders / Library Commissioners were unwilling to pay it. In early 2018, the building’s new owner tried to interest the Freeholders and Township Committee to return the library without an increase in the current rent. After months of delay, local residents circulated a petition requesting that the Freeholders and Township Committee take action. Then-Republican Mayor Tim Mathews prohibited the posting of the petition in the Municipal Building. Nine days later, the mayor finally rushed to a Freeholder meeting to discuss the library.
Republicans claim, "I will make great efforts to protect and enhance our farmland and open space, qualities which attracted Daniel and me to East Amwell.”
Fact: Democratic leadership over the past thirty years has resulted in 43% of our land preserved as private farmland and public open space. A key part of this effort was a change in zoning to require larger lot sizes for development. Republicans sued the township over the zoning change, and lost! Ms. Ramsey refers to the “qualities” that attracted her and her family to East Amwell. These “qualities” are the direct result of a forward-looking strategy by Democratic leadership over 30 years that was opposed every step of the way by Republicans. It is good to know that Ms. Ramsey’s and Mr. Mills appreciate the efforts made by Democrats in the past.
