Civility and Respect:
2020 has been a difficult year, but amid the hardships have been some bright spots. As a community, we in East Amwell have worked together to help each other: teens volunteering to help seniors do chores; community members sharing needed supplies or food; neighbors reaching out to check on neighbors to see how they are and what they need.
Shouldn’t we expect the same levels of civility, community, and respect from our Township Committee? Instead, our town representatives have met residents with sneers and our businesses with specious conspiracy theories that question their ethics. There is little to no discussion of important issues and resolutions that come before the Committee, and residents who question or have different viewpoints are met with hostility, abuse, and disrespect. With a 5-0 Republican majority, no member of the Township Committee supports those who are attacked, and it has been devastating.
The cost is high. Our township boards and commissions whose volunteers do so much for our community have been ravaged, and it’s difficult to find a committee that is now at full capacity. We’ve not been able to apply for some grants because one committee could not garner a quorum. We’ve been sued and lost court cases because of unsubstantiated accusations, among other issues.
Our community is filled with good and kind people who treat each other with respect and civility even when their views might be different. Tom Jarick and Philippe Marchal, Democrats, will bring balance back to our Township Committee and give residents the respect and representation they deserve.
